Doing Nothing

This morning my family was watching The (new) Karate Kid. There was a line that said "You can take action or do nothing." My 10yo daughter (who was eating nerds with chopsticks) commented that there was really no such thing as doing nothing, because even if you do nothing, you're doing something. I thought about her simple, yet profound words all day. During the sermon at church and the drive home and as I worked around the house.

If we see a child being bullied, but we do nothing, we're condoning bullies. If we see a neighbor show signs of being abused when she begins wearing sunglasses every time she comes out on even the cloudiest of days and long sleeves on the warmest of days, but do nothing, we're ignoring her plea for help. If we see a neighbor in need and don't offer help, we're turning our back on those God has asked us to help.

I was reminded of Matthew 25:45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ How many times do we see a need and keep going in our own little world?
